Bharatiya Janata Dal-Shiromani Akali Dal alliance has proved favourable in the municipal polls in Chandigarh. This victory is an indication of what will happen in the Punjab assembly elections. This alliance has silenced all the people in Punjab regarding the fate of the assembly elections in Punjab.
In the municipal polls the strong competitors against BJP-SAD alliance were Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party. If sources are to believed then it is evident that Aam Aadmi Party will prove to be a strong competitor against BJP-SAD but they did not take part in the municipal elections so its really difficult to understand who will be the ultimate winner.
It is really surprising that demonitisation has not affected BJP atleast in the urban areas it is so. The union territory of Chandigarh is considered to be the power house of both Haryana and Punjab and BJP is strongly influencing both the states. 20 wards was captured by BJP out of 26 wards in the municipal poll elections. Remaining 4 seats were given to sad but they lost 3 out of it.
The wife of the President of Chandigarh, Jagjit Singh Kang lost the sad seat in Chandigarh. There are total 9 nominated members and 1 MP as an ex-officio member of BJP. Congress initially had tried to focus on the issue of demonitisation and bring down the spirit of BJP but they were unsuccessful. Demonization did not affect BJP. People are happy with the idea of demonitisation.
BJP-SAD alliance was not taken seriously in the previous months by the opposition. Different factors like caste, economic conditions, personality trend will affect the assembly elections of Punjab in 2017 but it seems that BJP-SAD is trying their best to win the battle. Their alliance is aiming victory in Punjab for the past 10 years.
Sad will contest for 94 seats and BJP will contest for 23 seats in Punjab. This calculation is based on the previous election. AAP is contesting the assembly elections for the first time. In the Lok Sabha elections AAP has won victory of 4 on the total 10 seats in Punjab. People are with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on the issue of demonitisation so thats a real positive indicator for BJP in Punjab.
People seems to be on the side of BJP more than they were during the time of Lok Sabha elections. When the poor performance of SAD was dealt with,it was found that no senior member from SAD came for the campaign. That was a negative sign. Congress President of Chandigarh, Mr. Pradeep Chabra complained that the people were harassed on the issue of demonitisation.
Such response was not expected from Bharatya Janata Dal. They have misused their power. Mr. Chhabra is of the idea that if again elections are conducted using fresh ballot papers, they will definitely win. Assembly elections of Punjab will be held in the month of February and each party is trying their best to emerge victorious. So now we all need to wait and watch the results.
